(the title is a quote from a New York Times article, March 9, 2019, on Democratic positions in a time of resurgence– and how moderates are afraid the radicals will give away the party.)  What we need is a central figure to rally around as Democrats, somebody who is more popular generally than he who must not be named.  Moderates are terrified of being forced into radical positions, or having a radical candidate who will be “too far left.”

An old New Yorker article published during the presidential election campaign of 2016 reminds us of why and how he who must not be named became an “asset” of the Russian intelligence apparatus– otherwise known as a “useful idiot” (someone who unwittingly parrots the Kremlin line or follows its plans without realizing its true intentions.)

The article quotes Sergei Parkhomenko, an activist and broadcaster for Echo of Moscow, who describes Vladimir Putin’s motivation for pushing *His election specifically– as opposed to a general opposition to Hillary Clinton, because he suspected her of a hand in anti-Putin demonstrations at his election in 2012– as being twofold.

First, *His policies and behavior as president will cause intense internal dissension which will take America’s attention away from foreign-policy problems like the Ukraine.

“But there is a second reason,” Parkhomenko continued. “Putin is convinced that absolutely everything in this world is done for money. He is a religious fanatic, and money is his god. With money, it is possible to solve any problem, buy any interlocutor. He bought the Olympic Games, he bought the World Cup. It will be easy to deal with [Him]. He won’t need to use words in negotiations, only figures. When they don’t agree, it will only be necessary to find the right price.”

Thus, we will find the connection between *Him and Putin when we look at *His income tax returns.  Putin has paid millions of dollars for the privilege of directing his puppet’s performance, and that money will show up somewhere (if it hasn’t already, in the form of overpaying for real estate.)  Oh, and where did all that money come from that *He has spent on his golf courses the last few years?

How to lie and influence others to lie, without actually coming out and saying you want them to lie: a brief lesson from he who must not be named.

He who must not be named doesn’t directly tell people to lie– thus we have the Buzzfeed story which was refuted by a rare public statement from the Mueller office.  What he who isn’t named actually does is create an alternate reality in front of the person he is urging to lie– he says, repeatedly, the lie that he wants to hear from the subject and then goes out in public and repeats the same lie.  The subject is forced to either lie along with he who cannot be named or else contradict him and face his wrath.  He (the subject, in this case Michael Cohen) knows exactly what he who must not be named wants the subject to say.  He who must not be named doesn’t have to direct request anyone to do his dirty work for him– he merely implies that he needs something done, and repeats his implications again and again in the appropriate setting.

This is a well-known Mafia technique for getting things done without having to go on record as having requested or ordered them.  You need to have a staff that is well-tuned to what your needs are going to be in any situation– like Michael Cohen, who knew from ten years of experience with he who must not be named that he wanted Michael to lie when he said, “Michael, I know you’ll say the right thing.”

Of course, if you speak of “internal consciousness of lying” you may be mistaken, as it appears that he who must not be named actually believes many of the things that he has factually mis-stated.  There is an internal world that he inhabits which is unreal, fantastic, magical, and in which he is the hero of every story, since every story is about him.

Michael has been subjected to a process of intimidation, almost enchantment, in which he initially was irresistibly attracted to Individual 1, and thought that he could do not wrong.  By the time he realized that what he was doing for the unindicted co-conspirator was really wrong, he was already captive to the man’s psychological attractions.  He only broke free when he realized that the government was going to send him to jail for the rest of his life (twenty or more years) if he didn’t come clean– and his wife and children would be rendered indigent as a result.

The effect of his being entangled in Individual 1’s lies and corruption and being discovered by the special counsel investigation bothered him when he realized that his children would suffer– bothered him to the extent that he decided it would be better to stop being a fall guy for he who must not be named.

The Republicans make a lot of noise about how Michael is a convicted liar– but they leave out the part about how he lied for he who must not be named, but now he’s coming clean.  They conveniently gloss over the fact that his testimony before the House, if shown to be false, could land him in even more legal trouble.  So if he was a liar before, he’s got to tell the truth now or spend even more time in prison.

Masha Gessen on Measles Epidemic: It’s due to a lack of trust in the US healthcare system, which does not trust its own patients. Profit-driven healthcare systems cannot promote public health because public health is not profitable.

Here’s a quote from the Masha Gessen article, in this week’s New Yorker. (subscription…)   Normally Masha writes about politics, particularly related to Russia– due to Masha’s experience in Russia, there is a lot more clarity on what autocracy and disinformation do to politics.  However, this article on the measles epidemic explains that decisions that individuals make, decisions that have an effect on other people, are political.  So when you do something that has an effect on other people, that is a basic political act, the basis of all politics.

At any rate, this article on measles is particularly perceptive because it analyzes the measles epidemic and the lack of vaccinations that is causing it based on how Americans view their healthcare system.  The system is based on a lack of trust, partly because it is profit-driven; every patient generates a profit, and the more patients, the better.  Protocols for patient management are based on a complete lack of trust in the patient’s word for anything.

Thus, it is unsurprising when people don’t trust what they are told about measles vaccinations; there is a huge space for misinformation and disinformation.  Even Russian trolls on the internet are spreading anti-vaccine propaganda.  (How does the healthcare system in Russia handle the need for universal vaccination?)

So the healthcare system in the US is poorly suited to delivering public health or dealing with epidemiological problems like the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases:

The solution to under-vaccination lies not in getting the right kind of information and messaging to the “vaccine-hesitant” but in changing the politics of health care. Political agreement is unlikely among partners who do not trust each other, and near impossible when one side is explicitly profiting from the other. The American health-care system is ill-suited to protect public health, because a profit-driven industry cannot serve as the guardian of public good.

In the congressional hearing that everyone watched on Wednesday, Cohen implored Republican legislators to stop lying for the President as he said he had for years. They ignored him. Whether driven by perceived profit—financial or electoral—or willful belief, they would hold the line that they had adopted, facts and the public good be damned. In both hearings, one could observe the utter disintegration of politics.

Republicans have no defense against Michael Cohen allegations: he who must not be named is a serial liar, a con man, and a cheat. There is documentary evidence of His lies, which should lead to impeachment in a normal world. But this is Trumpworld.

Al Gore: the real Emergency is Climate Change, and drought due to climate change, followed by bankruptcy and starvation is forcing entire families to flee their homes in Central America and head for the US.

According to Al Gore, there is an area of Central America known as the “dry corridor” which includes parts of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  This area has suffered extreme drought for a full year, and all the crops this year have failed.  The farmers have been forced into bankruptcy, starvation, and emigration.  The sudden increase in immigrant families coming into the United States at the Mexican border is apparently caused by farmer families fleeing after their fall harvest failed.  The farmers went to the cities in their regions at first, and found them over-run by criminal gangs who operate with complete impunity and the cooperation of the police.  None of them had the money to pay smugglers for transport, so they organized into caravans– large groups of ordinary people who try to protect each other by force of numbers.  The most idealistic, and persistent, of the caravan members announce that they are going to the United States, and they are starting from such and such a city at such and such a date.  It doesn’t matter if only three people show up– as long as they get some publicity, they continue on the strength of new members attracted by the coverage.

Naturally, the president whose name we cannot use has called the immigrants “rough hombres” and criticized the involved nations for “not sending them their finest.”  He ignored the fact that the governments have nothing to do with the caravans or the people who join them, who are self-selected, not “sent.”

Al Gore’s comments came in an interview with “The Circle” on Showtime.  He described climate change as second only to nuclear war as a serious risk.

The basic issue here is that climate change is causing droughts in some areas and excessive rainfall in others.  These effects are difficult to predict, but once they happen the problems become obvious.  Entire populations of indigenous people already on the edge of economic or resource survival are forced to migrate by the destruction of their farming environments.  In addition to the poverty of these displaced people, there is the inadequacy of governments in the area– mostly small, corrupt, inept or even criminal– to relieve and support them.

The humanity of the distressed immigrant population is impressive to see.  They are mostly young women, under 30, with small children from birth to sixteen, and cousins, uncles, grandparents, and friends.  Mothers with one or two children and often a husband or boyfriend comprise the majority of the emigrants now.  Twenty years ago, the emigrants detained were mostly young men; the border patrol personnel have difficulty adjusting to this remarkable difference now.

Although the total number of detainees is still much less than it was twenty years ago and the border patrols have been greatly beefed up, the officers have difficulty adjusting to the fact that most of the people they detain are mothers with children rather than young men.  Detainee numbers also show this alarming pattern.  Total numbers went down after he who must not be named came into power.  A year later, numbers began rising.  At the same time, the composition of detainees rapidly changed from individual men (looking for work) to entire families (fleeing famine due to drought and criminal governments in their countries)…

 

On 7/2/17, He who must not be named said to reporters that he and Putin: “just talked about things. Actually, it was very interesting; we talked about adoptions.”

A paraphrase of a recent web “news” piece (in New York magazine, by Eric Levitz):

‘ Recent economic research has produced evidence that various forms of redistributive welfare spending increase aggregate productivity by improving poor children’s later economic outcomes… the key to stimulating innovation may be to increase worker’s wages and bargaining power, forcing firms to invest in automation and otherwise increase productivity to maintain profits…’

Furthermore, research indicates that inequality reduces economic growth by reducing consumer demand– with large absolute majorities of the population on the edge of poverty, there is little demand for ordinary consumer goods, only for luxury, low-quantity items… this imbalances product markets and reduces income from exportable production.

These economic research findings suggest that the mantra of conservative Republicans is just completely wrong and contrary to the realities of capitalism and social science– economics.  There is a large economic stimulus to be had from supporting the base of society, that is hoi polloi, with child care, basic and advanced schooling, and cash support for the necessities of life, like housing, food, clothing, and medical care.  Supporting otherwise powerless workers would stimulate innovation and growth by forcing industries to compete for profits on the basis of increased productivity rather than decreased employee expenditures.

Decreasing income inequality by taxing the ultra-rich to provide a basic income floor will stimulate economic growth by increasing consumer demand for mass market products.

These facts do not depend on an attitude of sympathy for the poor or collectivism nor for “equality” to be abstractly “good”– they simply point to the positive relationship between these policies and economic growth.  It’s easy for even self-centered conservatives to agree that economic growth is good.

What is difficult is getting to accept that policies that they believe are bad on principle actually have good results.  They just can’t believe that violating the commandments on limited government will have a beneficial effect on society in real life without somehow reducing individual liberty or infringing on their selfish rights.

Perhaps it would help if we pointed out that the directive to do these things is right there in the preamble to the Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
