this is about the best I could do with this image. My photography instructor would have told me to move the camera to get a different image, but then the seagull would probably have flown off

My guess is that your photo instructor would have said to level the image. The smokestacks are non-vertical for no obvious esthetic reason.
Second he/she would have suggested that you attempt to remove the color noise, although that is unlikely to work because the detail would go along with it.

It just occurred to me that the appearance of the smoke stacks not being level is due to the perspective at which the stacks are seen indicates their apparent height. since the image in fact is level, it’s level.

I understand that they are at differing distances and thus the tops are at different heights. One of the disorienting things about this photo is that there are no two verticals that are alike.
Note the edge of the building in the distance and the various masts and the pilings.
Something, which is vertical in real life, should be vertical in the image, probably the edge of the building.
Just so that the viewer can ‘understand.’

Are you trying to say you liked the first picture? Because that’s the one I liked the best, not the cropped one.

I’m sorry that I even said something; you didn’t put up photos for critique. I will read and keep quiet from now on.
Sorry,

Please don’t stop critiquing the photos because you have a great critic’s eye; I’m not familiar with your work, being new to this world, but I’m cerrtain that you are a fantastic photographer (among many other things)…. You’ll need a small pin to insertinto your skull for a few seconds now.
